The Car Care Council offers these fuel-saving tips:

Vehicle gas caps -- About 17 percent of the vehicles on the roads have gas caps that are either damaged, loose or are missing altogether, causing 147 million gallons of gas to vaporize every year.
Under inflated tires -- When tires aren't inflated properly it's like driving with the parking brake on and can cost a mile or two per gallon.
Worn spark plugs -- A vehicle can have either four, six or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles, resulting in a lot of heat and electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug causes misfiring, which wastes fuel. Spark plugs need to be replaced as recommended by the manufacturer.
Dirty air filters -- An air filter that is clogged with dirt, dust and bugs chokes off the air and creates a "rich" mixture -- too much gas being burned for the amount of air, which wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacing a clogged air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10 percent, saving about 20 cents a gallon.

Fuel-saving driving tips include:

Don't be an aggressive driver -- Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets, which results in 10 to 66 cents per gallon.
Avoid excessive idling -- Sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient.
Observe the speed limit -- Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mpg driven over 60 will result in an additional 10 cents per gallon. To maintain a constant speed on the highway, cruise control is recommended.

WIPERS - In the 2001National Car Care Month vehicle check lanes, 21percent of participants had wipers that smeared, streaked or chattered across their windshields. Although climates vary, wipers generally need replacing every six months. An easy reminder is to change wiper blades in the spring and fall when you change your clock. Be sure the windshield washers are working properly, too, and keep the reservoir filled with solvent.

LIGHTING - Another important pre-trip check should be exterior and interior lighting. Vehicle check lanes revealed an overall failure rate of over 25 percent in the lighting category. The Car Care Council reminds motorists to check their lights monthly. Other suggestions from the Council include turning on headlights both day and night. This helps define your car's position on the road, and its distance from other drivers. When your vehicle's lighting is defective, other motorists may not get the message that you intend to stop or turn. The end result could be disastrous.

10 Minute Pre-Trip Checkup Can Pay Off

Car Care Council offers three suggestions for a traveler's 10-minute pre-trip checklist:

Check all fluids. There are several fluids, in addition to antifreeze, that require attention, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission fluids and windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
Check hoses and belts. A belt that fails can affect the electrical system, air conditioning and power steering, as well as the cooling system. Cooling system hoses may be deteriorating from within, so old hoses and clamps in marginal condition might need to be replaced.
Check the tires. Check tire inflation and inspect the tread for uneven wear, indicating the need for wheel alignment. Also look for bulges and bald spots.

"While a last minute checkup is better than no checkup, motorists should plan ahead to allow time to perform necessary maintenance themselves or at the local service facility. A properly maintained vehicle is safer and more dependable and will even save a few dollars at the gas pumps," said the Car Care Council's Executive Director, Rich White.

Not only can a pre-trip inspection help reduce chances of costly and possibly dangerous road trouble, it also provides an opportunity to have repairs made at home, with one's own technician who knows the vehicle. Especially important, it provides peace of mind. While no inspection can guarantee a car's performance, it's comforting to know proper precautions were taken.

Chris Monroe doesn’t even bother introducing himself. He just paces the classroom, walks right up to a student, stretches out his hand and asks: “What’s your name, and why are you here?”

Penny Clontz recalls this moment with such clarity because, as the career development coordinator for Crest High School’s technical education program in Shelby, N.C., this was a first. For 20 years, it had been a struggle to motivate students to care about their futures, to help them understand the realities of working in a trade.

And Monroe was making it look easy.

He would say, ‘This is what you did wrong; this is how you shake hands,’” she says. “That sounds simple, but so many of these students don’t know how to do that, how to look somebody in the eyes. They don’t have basic people skills. There hasn’t been anybody to teach them that.”

As the second-generation owner of Monroe Tire & Service in Shelby, Monroe will go on—just as he has for the past 10 years—to host these Crest automotive students at his shop. It’s part of an internship rotation involving several area shops that has not only fueled a youthful passion for the industry, but hired many Crest students throughout the years.

It’s a Dirty Job...

Monroe remembers Mike Rowe, star of the television program Dirty Jobs, saying these words in an interview with TV host Bill Maher:

“I have a theory, and it’s based only on the 50 states I visited, the 300 jobs I did and the people I talked to … but nobody is talking about this overarching disconnect between the educational system we have, the employers we have, the students we have, the parents they have, the guidance counselors we have and the students they advise—and that gap is really the place between blue and white collar work. And it’s in that gap that about three million jobs have fallen.”

Rowe is referring to the “skills gap.” It stems from the ManpowerGroup’s “Talent Shortage Survey,” which reports that, of 38,000 employers surveyed, 32 percent had difficulty filling jobs due to lack of talent in various fields. Those fields ranged from healthcare to engineering to—what Rowe is advocating for—trade positions. In July 2013 when he was interviewed, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 3.6 million unfilled job openings.

Today, that number stands at 5.8 million.

Monroe, who took over his father’s shop in 2007, is troubled by these figures. As he’s grown the $1.6-million shop from three to eight bays, he’s experienced the difficulty of finding quality technicians.

Like Rowe, Monroe understands: Kids don’t find trade jobs glamorous enough; they don’t think auto repair pays well; their parents expect them to attend four-year universities. But instead of complaining, Monroe wants to do something about it—for his shop, for all shops.

In fact, Monroe doesn’t even beat around the bush: He wants to be the Mike Rowe of automotive repair.

“We need to have a better supply of trade skills, whether you’re HVAC, whether you’re an auto mechanic, whether you’re a plumber. Trades need a spotlight,” he says. “They’re being told, ‘You’re in the automotive class because you’re a dummy. So go fix cars.’ It’s an image problem, and it’s my passion to fix it.”

Getting On Board

Of the four public high schools in Cleveland County, N.C., only one has an automotive department—and Tony Fogleman, career and technical education director for Crest High School, claims it’s one of the best.

“Of all our technical education departments, we have the best setup with automotive,” he says. “I think it’s just how we’ve had everyone come together, how we’ve had the support of the local businesses willing to work with these students.”

When Fogleman joined Crest eight years ago, he joined Monroe and Clontz. They all came together through the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF), which helps schools form local advisory committees of industry professionals, bridging the gap between education and industry. On the committee, Monroe—also a Tire Industry Association board member—and several other area shops offer notes on curricula, help set up career days, provide updates on the latest industry trends and technology, visit classrooms, and host students.

Inspiring Students

Tony Fogleman has seen many students go through the automotive program. He provides some tips for engaging students looking for an auto repair career:

Boast About Vehicle Technology.
Fogleman says many students don’t find auto repair “sexy,” or don’t think it requires intellect.

“They need to understand, the technology involved in automobiles has changed a lot,” he says. “Helping them to see that, to understand that it’s not necessarily what it was 20 years ago, shows they have a chance to work with some really cool, new technology.”

Talk About Money.
Another misconception among students, Fogleman says, is that technicians don’t make very much money, or that training costs too much.

“We should help them see there are some great opportunities in trade jobs and there is plenty of money to be made,” he says. “Some employers are even looking to send people back to school and pay for additional training.”

Get Parents Involved.
One of the most crucial components of ensuring trained technicians, Fogleman says, is making parents part of the experience. Encourage parents to attend career days and stop by while students are job shadowing.

“They see that their sons and daughters don’t need four-year colleges to have good careers,” he says. “There are some great advantages to not being in lots of debt to get a degree that may not provide them a job opportunity.”

In the Classroom

As Monroe shakes each student’s hand, he sends the “dead fish” handshakes to the front of the class.

“Do you know why you’re up here?” he asks. “Because when you go in for a job interview, your handshake has already ruined your chances.”

You might find Monroe’s unorthodox approach harsh, but Clontz claims it’s been huge for motivating students.

“They usually get tired of hearing the same speech from instructors,” she says. “It’s important for it to come from outside the school, someone in the business.”

And with one shot to speak with students each school year, Monroe takes the 40 minutes available to heart. He lays out his routine for engaging and motivating students:

Get on their level. Monroe doesn’t shake each student’s hand for show—it’s strategy. He treats the relationship like a professional one, offering to be a resource down the road.

Start a conversation. The questions students usually ask are “lame,” Monroe says. Instead, he engages students by asking what they know about auto repair. Then he can gauge their expectations, enlighten them to the realities of the business, and discuss the internship.

Offer students a “real job.” He then discusses the internship like an actual job. Administrators have jumped on board with Monroe’s willingness to “fire” students if they don’t take their jobs seriously.

“If you don’t act like an employee or decide you don’t give a crap, we’re sending you home—you’re fired,” he says to students.

Discuss the skills gap. Monroe doesn’t just mention the overflow of available jobs for technicians—he shows them through a video presentation featuring industry celebrities (like Bogi Lateiner) and, of course, the Mike Rowe interview. He’s hoping the video can be distributed by an organization to motivate shop owners across the country.

“I wanted to show students in Minnesota, in Florida, in Texas, in Virginia how our trade works and let them know the opportunities that exist,” he says. “I think it could change the landscape.”

Hosting Students

The internship program typically hosts between 15–20 Crest automotive students. In groups, students cycle between seven NATEF committee members—four independent shops, two dealerships and one parts store—spending two weeks at each facility during school.

“We want them to come in and work with us, look at how we all do things differently, find what suits them best,” Monroe says.

Each session at Monroe’s shop begins with a sit-down orientation in his office, where he discusses tire nomenclature and his expectations. “I’m going to set the stage, let them know my employees are here to help,” he says. “I say, ‘If you engage these guys, they’ll engage you. If you just cross your arms and do the bare minimum? You won’t get anything out of this.’”

He also provides a checklist that outlines all the tasks students must complete—from tire rotations to suspension inspections to brake pad replacements—while moving between four shop departments: tire, oil, alignment and brakes.

Once Monroe goes over the checklist and schedule, he pairs students up with technicians, who are instructed to cover portions of the checklist. Monroe wants students to take initiative and perform work at their own pace. As vehicles come through, they will fix flat tires, replace rotors, inspect fluids—just like it’s a real job.

Students also track their activity in a journal. Then, at the end of two weeks, they critique his shop’s performance.

“It gives us insight into what we could be doing better to inspire them,” he says. “Also, the techs know they’re making a journal, so it helps everyone be accountable and cordial.”

Ensuring the Future

The ultimate goal is, of course, turning internships into full-time careers. Clontz says that in Cleveland County, 93 percent of career technical education concentrators go on to postsecondary education or advanced training, military service, or employment. As for Crest’s automotive program, Clontz says students have landed jobs every year the internship program has been in place.

While Monroe hasn’t hired any students himself, he has gladly helped them find employment at area shops and continued to serve as a mentor. Because, in the end, it’s not about getting ahead of competition—whether you’re Mike Rowe or just another shop owner, everyone should play a part in ensuring the future of auto repair.

“It’s tough letting good kids go, but I know it’s the right thing,” Monroe says. “We can’t always commit to them in high school, but at least hopefully we can plant the seed for them moving forward.”

Few things in life are constant. Death, taxes and … change. That’s right, everything changes like the seasons, your kids and especially your car; specifically, your car's air conditioning refrigerant. Yes, there is a new refrigerant on the block. It’s called R-1234yf (I know, it sounds like a Star Wars droid, but I didn’t name it).

Why the change? Well before we talk about the future let’s talk briefly about the past. In the 1930s through the early ‘90s FREON, also known as R12, was used in all vehicle air conditioning systems. However, R12 was found to be an ozone depleting greenhouse gas and has the ability to stay in the atmosphere for 100 years or more. By the mid 90’s R12 was phased out and replaced by R134a refrigerant. R134a may take up to 10 years to break down into a non-greenhouse gas. Twenty-five years ago, this was seen as considerable improvement over the 100-year-plus lifespan of R12. But R1234yf is a further advancement over R134a, as it takes only three to four years to break down in the upper atmosphere.

With the goal of reducing greenhouse gasses, the European Union required all vehicle manufacturers to replace the traditional R-123A with R-1234YF in January 2017. Soon thereafter, the EPA here in the United States followed suit. General Motors began introducing vehicles to the market utilizing this new system in 2013 with full conversion in 2018. Chrysler, Honda, and Subaru models followed in 2017. It is mandated that by 2022 all vehicles will contain 1234YF.

One of the compelling reasons R-1234yf was overwhelmingly chosen to replace R-134a in automotive air conditioning systems is because there are not really many differences between the way the systems are designed and work. This new refrigerant is also said to help improve fuel efficiency while greatly reducing the harmful effects placed on the environment by outdated refrigerants.

But there was more…….a funny thing happened while we were home waiting for the “curve to flatten”, we realized there were Heroes walking among us.

These Heroes don’t wear capes or stop speeding locomotives. They can’t leap tall buildings in a single bound, and they don't fly invisible jets…..they wear scrubs, they wear badges, they teach children. They put out fires. They keep the peace and keep us safe. They didn’t run from the Pandemic, they stared it right in the eye, manning hospitals and Emergency Rooms to care for the sick, working 12 or 16 hour days for weeks at a time, away from their families and loved ones. They adapted to things like “Hybrid Learning” and conducting classes through Zoom meetings. They came into our homes to make sure we were safe, selflessly risking exposure themselves. They did exactly what we would expect Heroes to do. Now it’s our turn.

1. Read The Owner’s Manual

When it comes to vehicles, there is no ‘one size fits all’ prescription. For example, the oil change schedule of your car depends on the type of car that you drive. Contrary to the common misconception, you don’t need to change the oil after every 3,000 miles.

Hence, before everything else, make sure you read the owner’s manual to double check what your vehicle needs during maintenance. If you don’t, you will probably end up putting the wrong oil into your vehicle’s engine and cause serious damage.

2. Learn The Meaning Of Different Warning Light Indicators

Most modern cars will notify you via warning lights whenever there are some issues that require immediate attention. However, those warning lights will be useless if you can’t interpret what they mean to choose the appropriate course of action. Here’s how it goes:

Service engine light – You see that little print on your dashboard written “service engine”, “service” or “maint reqd”? When you see that indicator light, it’s a reminder that the recommended maintenance schedule is due.

Check engine light – Otherwise known as the malfunction indicator lamp, it will tell you whenever the sensors in your engine detect a problem that ought to be fixed. Usually, it doesn’t specify the exact issue but you can consult a mechanic or use OBD2 scanner to find out the root cause of the problem.

In other words, it could be harder for you to suddenly stop your vehicle in an emergency situation. Otherwise, if both your ABS and brake warning lights are on, you shouldn’t risk driving your vehicle until the problem is fixed.

Oil Warning light – Once the oil in your engine is lowerthan recommended, the oil warning light will engage. It could also be a symptom of a bigger problem like oil filter blockage or oil pump malfunction. Mind you, driving your car when the warning light is on can completely wreak havoc to the engine.
